Description

EM-1 (Effective Microorganisms®) is a liquid microbial inoculant containing live beneficial microbes such as lactic acid bacteria, yeast, and photosynthetic bacteria. It works to activate and rebalance native microbial communities in soil, plants, animal environments, and organic waste systems.

Unbeatable Economic Advantage

One of the biggest advantages of EM-1 is its incredible expandability. From just 1 Liter of EM-1 stock, you can produce 20 Liters of Activated EM (EM-2).

While EM-2 is highly recommended for large-scale farms and industrial waste treatment for economic purposes, small-scale farmers can also use EM-1 directly without activation for maximum efficiency, as the potency of EM-2 naturally reduces over time.

EM-1 Application

Efficient microbial application for healthy soil and crops.

Key Benefits and Features of EM-1 in Kenya

1. Improves Soil Health and Fertility

  • Activates native soil microbes to increase nutrient cycling and organic matter breakdown.
  • Enhances soil structure and water retention, helping crops thrive under Kenya’s varied soil conditions.
  • Increases nutrient availability so plants can absorb nitrogen, phosphorus, and micronutrients more efficiently.
  • Regular applications make soil biologically rich and resilient.

2. Boosts Plant Growth and Crop Yields

  • Supports healthy seed germination, robust root development, and vigorous early growth.
  • Crops treated with EM-1 often show higher yields due to enhanced microbial activity around roots.

3. Enhances Composting and Organic Waste Decomposition

  • Accelerates the breakdown of plant residues, manure, and kitchen waste.
  • Compost treated with EM-1 becomes nutrient-rich faster.

4. Odor Control and Environmental Clean-Up

  • Suppresses foul smells in pit latrines, septic tanks, and animal housing.
  • Reduces flies, ammonia, and harmful gases, improving comfort and hygiene.

5. Safe and Organic

EM-1 contains no chemicals, pesticides, or GMOs and is safe for humans, animals, plants, and soil life. It is an ideal input for sustainable agriculture.

Usage Guide

How to Use EM-1: Activation & Application

In Kenya, EM-1 can be used directly or converted into an Activated EM (EM-2) solution. While activation multiplies the microbes for economic benefits, using EM-1 without activation is often more efficient for small-scale use.

Step 1: How to Make Activated EM / EM-2 (The 1:1:18 Recipe)

Important Note: The quality and efficiency of your EM-2 depend heavily on the quality of Molasses used and the precision of the activation process.

Standard Ratio: 1 part EM-1 + 1 part Molasses + 18 parts Water.

Materials Needed for a 20L Batch:
  • 1 Liter EM-1 (stock concentrate)
  • 1 Liter Molasses (food source)
  • 18 Liters Clean Water (Chlorine-free)
Activation Process:
  1. Dissolve the molasses in warm water.
  2. Add EM-1 and mix gently.
  3. Pour into an airtight container and seal it (anaerobic fermentation).
  4. Store in a warm, shaded place for 7–14 days.
  5. Ready check: pH drops below 3.7 and it smells sweet-sour/fermented.
Usage Lifespan: For best results, EM-2 should be used within 30 days after activation. However, it can remain effective for up to 90 days if stored correctly in airtight containers.

Step 2: Practical Application Rates (Dilution)

Once your EM-2 is ready (or using raw EM-1), dilute it with water for use:

Application Dilution Ratio Method
Crops (Foliar) 1:100 – 1:500 Spray leaves every 7–14 days.
Soil Drench 1:100 Apply during land preparation.
Livestock Water 1:1000 Add to animal drinking water.
Odor Control 1:50 – 1:100 Spray pit latrines or animal housing.
